How can you be prepared when the scare food supply is not enough to feed a growing population?

Here is a recently posted article on Yahoo News:

It really got me thinking. Someday the world population will grow so big that we wont be able to feed everyone. What can we do to prepare for this? Let’s have an open discussion, and everyone is entitled to their opinions.

My answer: I think people will go back to farming. I think we will have to reverse back to the way things were. A house will have a full size family, and the homes will become small again. The families will have to divide chores to manage the farm. I don’t mean to sound sexist, but stronger jobs will have to probably be done by men, and simpler tasks done by women, as the way things were. The currency will probably inflate to the point that it becomes worthless, so I predict that people will get by from trading again.

It’s not going to happen. The Malthusians (those who say we’ll run out of resources) have repeatedly been wrong. In the past, a population many times smaller than the current population was predicted to be unsustainable.

Genetically Modified Crops bring the promise of super-resilient, cheap crops that can feed many more people per hectare. New techniques in agriculture increase efficiency. With refrigeration and shipping, food can be grown anywhere and eaten anywhere, as fresh as the day it was grown.

Fewer people are starving than 50 years ago. Total real income has increased across the globe. As china and india advance, millions are being lifted out of poverty.

Modern man is a mindblowing good news story that for some reason is not being told. It doesn’t fit with our old-fashioned ways of thinking.

Don’t look to the past, when life was nasty, brutish and short. look to the future. It’s better.
