Currency Trading Kenya

East African Currency – Kenyan Shilling?
Next year i have the opportunity to visit a community centre in Kenya for a little over a week, And i’m wondering what to do about money?
Does anyone know the value of food and water (money wise) in Kenya? Or gifts etc?
I’ve also heard that if you try to offer money to members of the public they wont take it unless you accept a trade, is this true?
Any websites would be a big help, thanks!
Also, So i dont have to make a new question… Any idea what a Composting Choo is? lol
Bremen M : I’m not downloading anything from a website where every page is the same… I’m not an idiot…
P.S. I’m a student in the Uk, my college is organising the trip for around £1000 (flights and everything).
If your school is arranging the trip for 1000 pounds per person for a week, try to have at least the same or up to twice the amount to spend while in Kenya. As a tourist, chances are that prices of arts, crafts and curios that you might want to purchase to remember the trip will be higher.
Plan on spending 100 dollars per day for meals. Chances are that you will eat for less than that, but budget on about 100 dollars per day on food. On top of that plan on having 500 dollars for emergencies. Do not carry this 500 everywhere you go, but have it in say a bank or somewhere you can have easy access to it if you needed it. Then budget 1000 to 2000 dollars just to spend on stuff. Remember you don’t have to spend this much, but just have it just in case. You are a college student, so don’t go overboard, you are only going to be there for a week.
Food is relatively cheaper in Kenya than it is out here. Just make sure you drink bottled water, and never tap, while you are out there. They have many ot the major brands like Dasani.
A composting choo is what they call an outhouse in the US, aka a pit latrine. It is a hole in the ground where everyone poops, and then once they get full, they seal it with cement and dig another hole. Of course they build some kind of shelter around it so people are not watching you do your thing, but that is essentially what it is.
Bottom line is that you should have 1 – 2 times the amount the trip costs per person, just don’t be frivolous abour your spending.
