As with other futures and commodities, the idea of speculators like you is to carry the ball between the time when the supplier puts it into play and the ultimate party wanting the stuff delivered settles the contract. Speculators can make money while keeping this ball in the air, but there is a larger element of gambling to it than stocks or business hedging.
When learning to invest, most reputable lessons include the capitalistic fact that an economy is not supposed to be a zero-sum game. A casino is a zero-sum game, no additional wealth is made from a casino, what goes in to a casino is what comes out, though usually carried in different pockets. In investing, a business produces a product or service that (hopefully) ads value. If I buy a bunch of hamburger buns, some hamburger meat, and various associated things, I can produce value by taking bland bread and raw meat and turn it into a treat for your taste buds that will make you want to pay more than the sum of costs of the ingredients. This is just as the farmer and rancher grew grain and fattened cows, so that the grain is turned to bread and the cows into meat for human consumption. There is value added.
Currency and other commodity trading does not add value. Scarcity, storms, wars and the like diminish the supply, and that adds value because each unit that remains is all the more precious. The lack of such disruptions tend to increase supply, which diminishes unit value. Swelling human demand for the end products of those commodities (and money is a commodity because of the things it is exchanged for) causes a clamor for more, bidding prices upward.
Beyond those related mechanisms, then buying Euros or buying wheat is merely betting on a price rise, and selling unleaded gasoline contracts or selling silver contracts, is merely betting that you can buy them back cheaper (to close the trade) when the price is falling, keeping the difference if you bet right. The choice of words is significant. Unless something adds value, ForEx or anything like it is merely a substitute for putting chips on 13 at the roulette table or trying to make two matching rolls at craps.
